Q&A
Q1. Why a fish survey?
A1. It will be interesting to see what people are catching, plus, we wish to establish a baseline for monitoring the fish population going forward. Think of this as a similar exercise to the Christmas Bird Count.
Q2. What sorts of things can affect the fish population?
A2. The Introduction of competing species, warming waters, reduction in ice cover, changes in habitat, pollution, parasites, bacterial pathogens. Some species may be winners, and others may be losers.
Q3. Where can I find more info on what affects the fish population in Ontario lakes?
A3. Try here
Q4 How long is the survey open?
A4. It is open throughout the fishing season, so by all means please report as often as you can. However, the count period for statistical purposes is for August 1- 8 , and so we ask you in particular to report during that period. Big or small, we count ’em all!
Below is the actual survey, which you can fill out here if you wish.. (Note that to scroll through the survey one needs to use the elevator bar on the right.)
